Thursday, November 22nd - Editor)          The Writer's Guild Of America and The Motion Picture And Television Producers Association have announced their intentions to return to talks aimed at settling the their dispute. The two sides have agreed to return to the bargaining table on November 26th with the hope that a contract will soon follow.

While this is no promise that a compromise will be reached quickly, it is a step that I find to be a positive one. It is also a moment that both sides must take very seriously. If history is any example, the producers are interested in salvaging the 2007-08 television season and making sure they have the scripts ready for their pilot projects by early January. That is when the network executives make their "Pick-Up" decisions for the 2008-09 fall season. If the writers stay on the picket line past the end of the year, the producers will once again walk away from contract talks to insure that the suffering and loss by the writers is at least equal to their own. If that happens, look for the 22 week-long strike of '88 to be surpassed in length by the strike of '07-'08.

Last time, the industry suffered a loss of more than $500 Million before the two sides finally came to an understanding, if not an agreement. This time around, the stakes, and the potential losses, are even higher. The Television industry is already facing its first real challenge, as nearly 25% of the annual revenue that has traditionally been spent on TV advertising is instead moving to the internet this year. Of course the TV networks are planning to be there to catch those dollars on the other side by developing the delivery system need to bring their shows directly to the viewer via The Internet. In addition to trying to cut out the writers, the TV networks are also trying to cut out the distributors, the cable companies and the local affiliates. It's even possible that the networks will cut out the independent production houses and replace them with an in-house alternative that will mean more dollars for them and less for everyone else.

This is a critical time for Television. The future of the industry may hang in the balance. I just hope that each side can admit that they need the other.

Donald Trump recently avoided hearing those famous words "You're Fired" from the network executives at NBC, when he re-invented his reality series The Apprentice. Instead of being placed on the TV scrap heap, Trump will return for a 7th season on Thursday, January 3rd, along with 14 celebrity guests for The Celebrity Apprentice.

Instead of competing for a job with Trump, the contestants are earning money for their favorite charities while trying to gain bragging rights as the final contestant, who will be named "The Celebrity Apprentice". Weekly contests will provide the celebrities the chance to earn a total of over $1 Million for their charities and the final winner will be awarded a $250,000 bonus for the charity they have selected to represent. Contestants will be divided into two teams who will work together on business tasks in and around New York City.

The celebrities who have signed on for the contest are: Country Music Star Trace Adkins, Model & Actress Carol Alt, Actor & Religious Author Stephen Baldwin, Gymnast Nadia Comaneci, Playboy 2005 Playmate Of The Year Tiffany Fallon, Olympic Softball Pitcher Jennie Finch, TV Executive Nely Galan, Actress & Author Marilu Henner, Boxer Lennox Lewis, Former Apprentice player & former Presidential staff member Omarosa, Tabliod Editor and judge of "America's Got Talent" Piers Morgan, Ultimate Fighting Champion Tito Ortiz, Actor and Musician Vincent Pastore and Former bandleader of "Kiss" Gene Simmons.
