(October 18th, 2007 - Editor)          The cast and crews of a large number of the top 100 network television series are a very nervous bunch these days, as the beloved, or hated, weekly ratings have revealed what shows the audience is finding and what shows they are leaving. With the numbers now confirmed for the third week of the fall season, the axe could fall at any time on a series that is not delivering an audience. The network executives want to see their shows getting more popular each week and those new and returning shows that do not perform up to expectations could be replaced by one of several shows each network has waiting on the side for the first vacancy in the line-up.

C.S.I. (CBS) remains the number one show on television. Grey's Anatomy (ABC), Desperate Housewives (ABC), House (FOX), Without A Trace (CBS), N.C.I.S. (CBS) and C.S.I.: Miami (CBS) fill in the slots around Football and Dancing With The Stars (ABC) to complete the list of the top ten shows. From 10th place to 20th is mostly made up of shows returning for a second season. New competition has changed the game for some of them, but for the most part they are keeping their audience.

********************************************************************************************

The strongest show among the new fall offerings is the ABC spin-off series Private Practice. The series is at least holding on to an average 18th place in the ratings so far this season. That is remarkable considering the very competitive line-up on Wednesdays this season. NBC's The Bionic Woman and ABC's Pushing Daisies both found their way into the top 20 shows briefly, but now reside at the bottom of the top 25.

Two of the biggest disappointments of the season so far have to be Dirty Sexy Money and Big Shots, both on ABC. Both ensemble drama series started strong and both have faded quickly, as the writing has not provided us with interesting characters or situations. Oddly both are among the best new efforts of the season, but with numbers that have earned both shows a place in the middle 30's on the top 100 list, neither show can feel good about the future.

After a better than expected debut in 39th place, the ABC situation comedy Cavemen lost nearly 15% of its audience and slipped to 55th place overall. Despite the slip in total audience, the comedy show was still second among new comedy offerings this season. Cavemen was topped for total audience by the CBS comedy Big Bang Theory, but they did manage to beat the FOX sitcom Back To You. Comedy in general is not drawing large audiences on television these days.

The entire CW lineup is arranged in order at the bottom of the ratings list. With number that low, none of their shows would survive on the other networks. But with little else to put onto the line-up, you just never know how long they will continue to hold on to this roster of under-performers. My prediction early this summer, that this network would not exist at the end of this season, is starting to look like it might come true. I'm looking for a miracle show to save them.

It looks to me like all of the major networks are being a little more patient this season in the hope that some of their new offerings will find an audience once some others have been removed from the schedule. This waiting game gives the producers of the struggling series some time to try and tweak their shows in the hope of starting a little buzz around their shows. But usually, if a show if already sliding in the ratings after just a few weeks, it is a very hard thing to turn that around. I'm still rooting for a few favorites, but it's starting to look like there just isn't any breakout hits in the 2007-08 television season.
