 Better With You

(June 20th, 2010.  -  Editor)               Anna Garcia, Jennifer Finnigan, Josh Cooke, Jake Lacy, Kurt Fuller and Debra Jo Rupp star in the half hour situation comedy Better With You.

Maddie and Ben have been dating for nine years. They know each other inside and out, a relationship marked by contentment and affection, seeing their commitment to one another as a "valid life choice," something they proclaim often, and, often, loudly. Maddie's younger sister, Mia, has been dating Casey for seven weeks. With a shared c'est la vie attitude, Mia and Casey are smitten with each other, and thrilled to explore the oh so many things they don't know about each other yet. But when they announce they are getting married and having a baby, it's news that completely throws Maddie for a loop. Surprisingly, the girls' parents, Vicky and Joel, couldn't be more pleased. Married 35 years, they have recently adopted a carpe diem type of attitude, much like Mia's, mostly due to getting older and losing a good portion of their savings when the economy tanked. With three very different relationships tightly intertwined in one family, will it be free thinkers versus over-thinkers, or will each couple begin to see things a little bit differently?

A situation comedy survives and finds an audience if it has one of to things. It has either a great situation or a great cast. Of course the hope is always to have both, but when that is not possible look for one or the other. In the case of this comedy, the situation is the cast, so right off the top we are down to a half win at best. All In The Family may have been able to make that work because they explored the volatile political and cultural situations of their day. This effort has none of that and is being offered at a time when there are no clear political statements being made by either side.

The lack of a major agenda means this comedy is already struggling to find itself in the pilot episode. I can’t imagine what kind of things they will stoop to by episode 22. Once the family dynamic is revealed, we have little else to do. Give this one a miss. You won’t be missing very much at all.
