Michelle
Ryan (EastEnders), Mae Whitman (State of
Grace), Miguel Ferrer
(Crossing Jordan), Chris Bowers (Rescue Me), Will Yun Lee (Witchblade)
and Molly Price ("Third
Watch") star
in the remake of the 1970's hit series The
Bionic Woman, airing Wednesdays on NBC.
Struggling as a bartender and surrogate mom to her teenage sister, Jaime
Sommers (Ryan) didn't think life could
get much harder. But when a devastating car accident leaves her at
death's door, Jaime's only hope for survival is a cutting-edge,
top-secret technology that comes at a hefty price. With a whole new
existence and a debt to re-pay, Jaime must figure out how to use her
extraordinary abilities for good, while weighing the personal sacrifices
she will have to make. Ultimately, it's Jaime's journey of
self-discovery and inner strength that will help her embrace her new
life as the Bionic Woman.
Fans of the original series are going to have readjust their thinking
if they are to embrace this 21st century version of the classic 1970's
TV hit. This updated version of the story is a dark and brooding story
of an anti-hero who is forced to accept her new role as a bionic
freak. She is certainly glad the secret government teams headed by her
boyfriend was able to save her life. But now that life is not her own,
as the government is expecting a little payback for the millions in
super-secret hardware they have installed. Both legs, one arm and one
ear have been replaced with high-tech hardware that gives her
abilities to run, fight and her beyond the capabilities of any human.
The pilot episode spent the majority of its time introducing the
characters and the circumstances and not enough time showing off the
abilities of their new hero. I am expecting that to change as future
episodes and boy am I looking forward to it. The trouble I always had
with the original series was their inability to give us credible
special effects. That problem is gone now, as the computer generated
effects in this series offer us what this series should have looked
like in the first place. As the characters and the crew become
accustomed to the effects they can make, the writers should be able to
create some great situations for us to watch this character get out
of.
The biggest problem this show will face when building an audience is a
very busy Wednesday night schedule by all of the networks. The
competition is going to be tough, but this gem of an action drama is
worth finding and worth taping. Give it a chance. If it doesn't
already have you hooked I think it will in the next few weeks.
