 Blue Bloods

(June 20, 2010,  -  Editor)               Tom Selleck, Len Cariou, Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes and Dylan Moore star in the one hour police drama Blue Bloods.

A multi-generational family of cops is dedicated to New York City law enforcement.  Frank Reagan (Selleck) is the New York Chief of Police and patriarch of the Reagan brood, which he heads as diplomatically as he does the force, even when dealing with the politics that plagued his unapologetically bold father, Henry (Cariou), during his stint as Chief. A source of pride and concern for Frank is his eldest son Danny (Wahlberg), a seasoned detective, family man and Iraqi War vet who on occasion uses dubious tactics to solve cases.  The sole Reagan woman in the family, Erin (Moynahan), is a N.Y. Assistant D.A. and newly single parent, who also serves as the legal compass for her siblings and father.  Jamie (Estes) is the youngest Reagan, fresh out of Harvard Law and the family's "golden boy."  However, unable to deny the family tradition, Jamie decided to give up a lucrative future in law and is now a newly minted cop, a career change seemingly supported by his beautiful girlfriend, Sydney Davenport (Moore), a first year lawyer. Jamie's life takes an abrupt turn, however, when he's asked to become part of a clandestine police investigation even his father knows nothing about, and one that could impact the family's legacy.

You know there is something wrong when you look at the roster of stars for a new police drama and see several major name stars. And then you see a Friday night time slot. Fridays have been a dead zone for network television for decades, despite several attempts to bring life into the evening and viewers to the screen. Fridays are where TV show are sent to live-out their final few episodes before dying with a whimper. A drama that is introduced on Friday night is already struggling and must be very impressive quickly if they hope to turn it around. Because this drama is on CBS, where there are a lot of returning shows and few available time slots, I’m willing to give this one a chance.

This is a solid effort to truly bring us a police drama. The kind of show where we are unsure just who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. The multi-generational cast allows us to look at the various past present and future elements of the story. But the slow pace of the pilot episode has me worried. Yes there is a little action, but mostly this is a character drama and I just have to wonder if the audience is going to embrace these characters.

I have to admit I am a big Tom Selleck fan. His light attitude, infectious smile and giant moustache combine in an everyman character that can be injected into just about any situation. Unfortunately, this drama calls for a dark and brooding character, that while Selleck is very capable of playing that guy, it is not the kind of guy the audience will want to see every week. The other guy is way more fun.

I will be surprised to see the dark, slow, brooding drama make it past episode six. And the only reason it will go that far is the star power included in the cast. We already have a lot of cop shows on TV and this one doesn’t bring anything new to the mix.
