 Hellcats

(June 20th, 2010.  -  Editor)               Aly Michalka, Gail O'Grady, Ashley Tisdale, Heather Hemmens, Robbie Jones, Matt Barr, Sharon Leal, Jeff Hephner and D.B. Woodside star in the prime time serial drama, hellcats.

HELLCATS is a coming-of-age story about Marti Perkins (Aly Michalka, "The Roommate," "Bandslam"), a pre-law scholarship student at Lancer University in Memphis, Tennessee. Marti is a hip, edgy townie with working class roots, whose world flips upside down, literally and figuratively, when her scholarship is cancelled and her well-meaning but irresponsible mother, Wanda (Gail O'Grady, "NYPD Blue," "American Dreams") neglects to inform her.

Broke and out of options, Marti realizes the only way she can stay in school is by repurposing her dormant gymnastic skills to win a place on the Hellcats, Lancer's legendary cheer squad, and the scholarship that comes with it. She had been a rising star in high school gymnastics until she abruptly quit senior year, so Marti knows she has the moves and athleticism needed for the squad. When she rocks the tryouts and "makes the mat," Marti is thrust into a world of camaraderie, backstabbing, and competition that takes place at the intersection of the Memphis music scene, backroom academia, college town politics and big money collegiate sports, in the Deep South, football is God.

This series was developed to have a little something for everyone. Front and center there are a group of great looking young people who are going through the paces as competitive cheerleaders. That by itself is bound to be an audience pleaser, as the guys want to watch these girls and the girls want to be them. Then there is all the drama of the relationships, romantic and otherwise, that come out of that situation. If you are creating a primetime soap opera, you couldn’t ask for a better platform.

Now all this show needs is a steady stream of good scripts that keep the audience caring what happens to these people. That isn’t always easy, but this effort has a serious chance at catching on with a wide audience. Co-stars  and  have already discovered that they have a natural chemistry and they will be developing his even further as the season progresses. I think they will be able to keep the audience engaged with them as hey explore this new relationship.

This show is not rocket science. But it is good light entertainment. And that should be enough to keep it on the air long enough to build an audience.
