 Law And Order: Los Angeles

(September 24th, 2010.  -  Editor)               Skeet Ulrich, Corey Stoll, Alfred Molina and Regina Hall star in the latest spin-off of the Law & Order franchise, Law & Order: Los Angeles.

Law & Order: Los Angeles is a procedural crime drama that will follow the theme and storylines similar to the "Law & Order" brand series on the streets of Los Angeles. The drama follows Detectives Rex Winters (Skeet Ulrich, "Jericho") and Tomas "TJ" Jarusalski (Corey Stoll, "Midnight in Paris") as they pursue cases through the diverse City of Angels.  As members of the Los Angeles Police Department's elite Robbery Homicide Division, Winters is a straight-shooting ex-marine with a clear-cut world view as stubborn as he is, while "TJ," who grew up the son of an Oscar-winning Polish cinematographer, knows too well the dark underside that is behind-the-scenes Hollywood.

Deputy District Attorney Morales (Alfred Molina, "En Education," "The Da Vinci Code," "Spiderman 2") is a sarcastic realist who believes moral righteousness is great in theory, but ineffective in a street fight.  Though he knows how to manipulate both his public image and the behind-the-scenes politics, he is still a killer in the courtroom who lives to see justice served. At Morales' side is Deputy District Attorney Evelyn Price (Regina Hall, "Death at a Funeral") an idealist and a true believer.  She has faith that the system she serves is capable of drawing clean lines between good and evil, a belief that her boss, the pragmatic DDA Morales, does not share.

When I heard that the law & Order franchise was going to be divided yet again, my first reaction was that this series had seen it’s better days and should be allowed to die in peace. But this newest incantation has at least tried to be something different by attaching itself to the business of show business.

It will be fascinating for many viewers to see some of the greed and lust that goes on in Hollywood. The idea that this city is filled with pretty lights and beautiful people will suddenly be replaced by the honest and chilling examination of human nature when faced by incredible wealth and greed. The biggest lesson offered by the pilot episode is that while there may be a lot of beautiful people in tinsel town, their inner beauty may be somewhat more difficult to see.

I still think that this franchise has been over-worked and over sold, but at least for this slightly jaded television critic, this series offers a look at the real side of the Television and Feature Film business. And that is something that the average viewer has never been allowed to see before.
