 The Event

(September 20th, 2010. -  Editor)                Jason Ritter, Sarah Roemer, Blair Underwood, Laura Innes, Scott Patterson, Ian Anthony Dale and Željko Ivanek star in the drama The Event.

"The Event" is an emotional, high-octane conspiracy thriller that follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter, "The Class"), an Everyman who investigates the mysterious disappearance of his fiancée, Leila (Sarah Roemer, "Disturbia"), and unwittingly begins to expose the biggest cover-up in U.S. history.  Sean's quest will send ripples through the lives of an eclectic band of strangers, including: newly elected U.S. President Martinez (Golden Globe nominee Blair Underwood, "In Treatment"); Sophia (Emmy Award nominee Laura Innes, "ER"), who is the leader of a mysterious group of detainees; and Sean's shadowy father-in-law (Scott Patterson, "Gilmore Girls").  Their futures are on a collision course in a global conspiracy that could ultimately change the fate of mankind.

Wow. I guess someone at NBC decided that now that Lost is done, their network needed to be the next to launch a totally confusing, pointless and seemingly endless series that will deliver tiny bits of information at a snail’s pace and hope that the audience will be lulled into thinking they are watching something really elusive and cool, instead of something that makes a soap opera seem like it’s moving fast. This story of government secret operations, political back-stabbing and power-grabbing might appeal to a small segment of the television audience, but I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that a show like this forces us to make more of a time commitment than we are prepared to do, after the pilot episode lulled us to sleep with endless character introductions, out of sequence chronicling and an “Event” that left an entire audience uttering a collective “Huh!, That’s it”.

I will be shocked to see this show remain it its time slot for November sweeps. After a summer-long build up to nothing, this series has proved to be a massive dud. The acting is fair, but I think the cast would have been able to engage more with the script and the characters if they were told where this drama was going. At the very least, the pilot should have been a two hour episode to help the actors and the audience figure out just where this drama is heading.

This show may pull off a miracle and still be around at the end of the season. But if it does, it will be because the writing gets better, fast.
