 Undercovers

(September 20th, 2010. – Editor)               Boris Kodjoe, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Carter MacIntyre and Gerald McRaney star in the action drama Undercovers.

"Undercovers" is a sexy, fun, action-packed spy drama that proves once and for all that marriage is still the world's most dangerous partnership.  Outwardly, Steven Bloom (Boris Kodjoe, "Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion," "Soul Food," "Resident Evil: Afterlife") and his wife, Samantha (Gugu Mbatha-Raw, "Doctor Who," "Bonekickers"), are a typical married couple who own a small catering company in Los Angeles and are helped by Samantha's easily frazzled younger sister, Lizzy (Jessica Parker Kennedy, "Smallville").  Secretly, the duo were two of the CIA's best spies until they fell in love on the job five years ago and retired.  When fellow spy and friend Nash (Carter MacIntyre, "American Heiress") goes missing while on the trail of a Russian arms dealer, the Blooms are reinstated by boss Carlton Shaw (Gerald McRaney, "Deadwood") to locate and rescue Nash.  The pair is thrust back into the world of espionage as they follow leads that span the globe -- and Steven and Samantha realize that this supercharged, undercover lifestyle provides the excitement and romance that their marriage has been missing.

After a summer filled with near endless promotion for this series, I was expecting a slightly updated version of Hart To Hart. While there seems to be a little more to this so-called spy drama, my initial reaction was not that far off the mark.  The premise of a husband and wife who have retired from their life as an international spy in order to open a catering business may be possible, but who wants to watch it.

The deadpan antics of co-star Gerald McRaney add exactly nothing to this effort. In fact they are so stereotypical that they might make the other characters less believable. Likewise co-stars Kodjoe and Mbatha-Raw add little to the dialogue and less to the action. We just don’t care about these people or their agenda.

Because this network is so desperate for anything that will draw an audience, this series may get a few more episodes to improve before being given the hook. As far as I’m concerned the network should concentrate on better projects. If they can find any.
