Hart Of Dixie

(September 29th, 2011. - www.tvview.tv)               Rachel Bilson, Jaime King, Wilson Bethel, Cress Williams, McKaley Miller and Scott Porter star in the one hour drama Hart Of Dixie, airing Mondays on the CW Network..

Fast-talking New Yorker and brand new doctor Zoe Hart has it all figured out. After graduating top of her class from medical school, she’ll follow in her father’s footsteps and become a cardio-thoracic surgeon. But when her dreams fall apart, Zoe decides to accept an offer from a stranger, Dr. Harley Wilkes, to work with him at his small practice in Bluebell, Alabama. Zoe arrives in this small Gulf Coast town only to find that Harley has passed away and left his half of the medical practice to her in his will. She quickly finds that Southern hospitality isn’t always so hospitable. The other doctor in town, Brick Breeland, is less than pleased to be sharing the practice with this young outsider, and his daughter, Lemon, is a Southern belle whose sweet disposition turns sour when she meets Zoe. Zoe’s only allies are the mayor, former football star Lavon Hayes, her bad-boy neighbor Wade Kinsella, and handsome lawyer George Tucker, who just happens to be Lemon’s fiancé. Zoe is out of her element and ready to pack her bags, but a surprise visit by her snobby New York mother leads to Zoe’s decision to stay in Bluebell for a while, discovering small-town life and a side of herself she hadn’t known was there.

This is a good solid character drama. Everybody knows who the good guys are and who the bad guy are right out or the gate. But this one has a watchable quality to it that will build an audience over time. And because this drama is on the CW network, expectations will be small, just like the ratings.

Star Rachel Bilson plays her part well, as do most of the supporting cast, but I just don't see this drama having the legs to make it to the end of the season. There are too many stereotypes and too few new ideas. We have seen the big city person goes small town plot played out a lot of different and better ways than this. Rent the movie "Doc Hollywood" or check out the TV series Northern Exposure. Both were better "Fish Out Of Water" stories than this effort.

I could be wrong about this drama, but my instincts say that I am not. But if future scripts bring a good deal more humanity and a lot less stereotype, this one may turn around before it is too late. But if they keep moving down the path of making fun of a region of the country and calling it comedy, then the ratings never will rise for this drama.
