Revenge

(September 29th, 2011. - www.tvview.tv)               Madeleine Stowe, Emily Van Camp, Gabriel Mann, Henry Czerny, Ashley Madekwe, Nick Wechsler, Josh Bowman, Christa B. Allen and Connor Paolo star in he serial drama Revenge, airing Wednesdays on ABC.

Wealth, beauty and status define the people in this town, but one woman is willing to destroy everyone for the sake of revenge. Emily Thorne (Van Camp) is new to the Hamptons. She’s met some of her wealthy neighbors, has made a few new friends and seemingly blends into the town. But something is a little odd about a young girl living in a wealthy town all on her own, and the truth is that Emily isn’t exactly new to the neighbourhood. In fact, this was once her old neighbourhood, until something bad happened that ruined her family and their reputation. Now Emily is back, and she’s returned to right some of those wrongs in the best way she knows how, with a vengeance.

The plot of this serial drama suggests that it has the potential to become the next runaway hit. There is a large cast to keep several plot lines running at the same time. There is money, power, sex, and lets not forget revenge. If there is a flaw in the pilot episode, it is that it takes so long to introduce this giant cast that they barely have time to get to the tensions between the various characters. As long as the various plot elements keep moving forward and keep their audience entertained, this one has serious potential. On the flip side, if the writing fails to deliver the complex, diabolical and hateful twists and turns we are already expecting, the audience will desert this drama like the rich leaving The Hamptons after Labour Day.

Dramas featuring a large cast are very expensive to make and often difficult to keep on track. It is usually only a few episodes into their debut season that the various cast members discover that they don't get paid as much if they don't have as many lines as a co-star. Before long, there are battles over the smallest plot turn. It will take a strong production team to keep a lid on this cast if the ratings start to rise.

Of course that is always the final question. Will the ratings rise? I am betting that they will. There were a few bumps in the pilot episode, but once this cast and crew get working together, I think we are in for some wild times.
