Two Broke Girls

(September 21st, 2011. - www.tvview.tv)               Kat Dennings, Beth Behrs, Jonathan Kite, Garrett Morris and Matthew Moy star in the half hour comedy Two Broke Girls.

Two young women who waitress at a greasy spoon diner, strike up an unlikely friendship in the hopes of launching a successful business, if only they can raise the cash.  Sassy, streetwise Max (Dennings) works two jobs just to get by, one of which is waiting tables during the night shift at the retro-hip Williamsburg Diner.  Sophisticated Caroline (Behrs) is an uptown trust fund princess who's having a run of bad luck that forces her to reluctantly give waitressing a shot.  At first, Max sees Caroline as yet another in a long line of inept servers she must cover for, but she's surprised to find that Caroline has as much substance as she does style.  When Caroline discovers Max's knack for baking amazing cupcakes, she sees a lucrative future for them, but they first need to raise the start-up money.  While they save their tips, they'll stay at the restaurant, working with Oleg (Kite), an overly flirtatious Russian cook; Earl (Morris), a 75-year-old kool-kat cashier; and Han Lee (Moy), the new, eager-to-please owner of the diner.  Working together, these two broke girls living in one expensive city might just find the perfect recipe for their big break.

I liked the chemistry between the two lead actresses right away. Each is playing their character in a very human way, even though they are on a multi camera sitcom. I am already waiting to see what will come out of their mouths next. And I am looking forward to even sharper dialogue in future episodes once the stars begin to develop a relationship with the writing staff.

The public setting allows for a parade of guest stars that will keep this comedy from growing old. Or from being trapped in an apartment or other closed setting. If the produces choose (Hint Hint) they could bring a wide variety of actors, comics, singers and entertainers through the diner each week. Not only would it pay homage to those who helped to build the Entertainment industry, it would likely help build the ratings too.

Series Co-Creator and Co-Executive Producer Whitney Cummings must have to pinch herself when she gets out of bed in the morning to make sue that her real life is not just a dream. Not only is the stand Up comedian starring in her own series on NBC that looks to have the right stuff to remain on the schedule, but this show also looks like it has what it takes to find a place on the schedule on a regular basis. Not bad for someone you probably have never heard of before.

I like this comedy. I think it is certainly the best new comedy on CBS, and it is looking like one of the top few of the season on any network. Give it a look and decide for yourself.
